かつて街の中心としてにぎわっていた公園の端に建つ古いマンション。その1階、道路に面した部分をスタジオへと改修しました。マンションに面する公園側には物置が置かれ、公園に開いた関係性を築くことは困難でした。そこで私たちは、周辺のまちや既存の造作に潜むわずかな違和感の中に手がかりを求め、それらをどのように受け止め、応答していくかを設計の軸としました。

内部空間では、間仕切りや天井を取り払い、できるかぎり余白を残す構成としています。水回りのために設けた2枚の壁には、正円の開口を穿ちました。円の小口や既存サッシの障子、テントフレームなどには彩色を施し、かたちそのものを前景化しています。

こうした操作によって、建物やまちに潜む「かたち」が浮かび上がり、利用者や訪問者のクリエイティビティを喚起し、過去の痕跡と新たな活動が重なり合うような空間を目指しました。

We renovated the first floor of an old apartment building facing the road, which stands on the edge of an area centered around a park that was once the bustling center of town.

Almost no traces of its former bustle can be seen, and opening it up to the park would be difficult as the back side faces the park and is now occupied by a storage shed. However, there was something odd about the surrounding town and the existing fixtures, so we looked for these small clues and made the question of how to position the building in relation to the town the theme of the design.

The interior fixtures were simply demolished to make full use of the space, such as the partitions and ceiling, and two walls were installed for the plumbing etc. This wall was carved out into a perfect circle.

By painting the edges of this circle, the existing shoji screens of the sashes, the tent frames, etc., and foregrounding the shapes of the objects, we aimed to create a space that would bring out the "shapes" hidden in the building and town, and stimulate the creativity of users and visitors.
