道北・美深町の町はずれに、かつて警察官舎として使われていた組積造の建物が２棟、静かに佇んでいました。長らく使われていなかったその建物を、客室３室を備えた小さな宿へと改修しました。２棟のあいだには渡り廊下を設け、道路に近い南側の棟を客室棟に、奥まった北側の棟をラウンジと書斎のある共用棟としています。
外壁には、北海道でも珍しい「タンガラ」と呼ばれる青灰色のモルタル製ブロックが使われており、解体作業を進めるなかで、内壁にも同じ素材が使われていたことがわかりました。この組積造ならではの重厚で素朴な表情を活かしながら、道北の厳しい冬を快適に過ごせる断熱性能と、宿として快適に過ごせる機能性の両立を図っています。
宿のエントランスは、道路に面した駐車場から最も遠い場所に位置しており、宿泊される方は敷地の奥に広がる草原の風景を体験してから、ラウンジへと向かいます。ラウンジは、クライアントが長年かけて集めてこられた書籍を納めた本棚に囲まれた一室空間となっており、本に触れながら静かに過ごせる場所となっています。３つの客室は、面積や窓の配置などの条件を丁寧に検討した結果、それぞれ異なる特徴をもった空間となりました。均一に整えるのではなく、建物がもつ個性を尊重することで、自然な違いが生まれています。
組積造の構造がもつ制約を受け入れ、その不自由さを設計の手がかりとすることで、この場所にしかない宿のかたちが立ち上がりました。素材と風景、そして記憶が折り重なる、穏やかで奥行きのある空間となっています。

On the outskirts of Bifuka Town in northern Hokkaido, two masonry buildings that were once used as police barracks stand quietly. We renovated these long-unused buildings into a small inn with three guest rooms. A walkway is provided between the two buildings, with the southern building closer to the road serving as the guest room building and the northern building further back serving as a common area with a lounge and study.
The exterior walls are made of blue-gray mortar blocks called "tangara," which are rare even in Hokkaido, and as the demolition work progressed, we discovered that the same material was also used for the interior walls. While taking advantage of the solid and rustic look unique to this masonry construction, we aim to achieve both insulation performance that allows you to comfortably spend the harsh winters of northern Hokkaido and functionality that allows you to stay comfortably as an inn.
The entrance to the inn is located at the farthest point from the parking lot facing the road, and guests can experience the grassland scenery that spreads out at the back of the site before heading to the lounge. The lounge is a single room surrounded by bookshelves containing books that the client has collected over the years, and is a place where you can spend quiet time reading books. The three guest rooms were each designed with different characteristics after careful consideration of factors such as area and window placement. Rather than making them uniform, natural differences were created by respecting the individuality of the building.
By accepting the constraints of the masonry structure and using these inconveniences as a design cue, a lodging unique to this location was created. It is a serene, deep space where materials, scenery, and memories overlap.
