北海道大学大学院国際広報メディア・観光学院では、留学生や社会人も含む多様な背景をもつ人々が同じ研究棟で過ごしているものの、交流の機会が減少していることが課題となっていました。学生主体のワークショップによって図書資料室の改装案が作成され、一部実施されたものの、利用者の増加にはつながらず、さらなる改善が求められていました。

もっとも大きな課題は、「気軽に集まりたくなるコワーキングスペースのような場」としての機能と、貴重な資料を保管する図書資料室としてのセキュリティを、どのように両立させるかという点にありました。現行の電子ロックドアによる施錠では、自由な入退室が難しく、気軽に立ち寄れる空間とは言い難い状況でした。

そこで私たちは、既存の電子ロックドアの位置を見直し、セキュリティゾーンの外に利用者が自由に出入りできる「学びのひろば」として開放的な空間を新たに設ける案を提案しました。

さらに、机や椅子といった備品の更新はなされていたものの、空間そのものには手が加えられておらず、全体的に暗く閉鎖的な印象が残っていました。そこで、「観光学」という専門性と、多文化が交わる場としての交流の場としての空間性に着目し、「暖簾」をモチーフとした天井造作を提案しました。ワーロン紙を用いた軽やかな暖簾上の造作を天井にランダムに配置することで、天井設備を視覚的に隠しつつ、柔らかな光を空間全体に拡散させます。これにより、空間全体の明るさと快適性を高め、さまざまな文化の交流が生まれる空間が生まれることを意図しています。

At the Graduate School of International Media, Communication, and Tourism Studies at Hokkaido University, people from diverse backgrounds—including international students and working professionals—share the same research building. However, in recent years, a decline in opportunities for interaction between students and faculty had become a concern. Although a student-led workshop resulted in a partial renovation of the library resource room, it did not lead to a noticeable increase in usage.

Our challenge was to balance two seemingly conflicting goals: creating a space where people could gather casually, while also ensuring the security needed for storing valuable materials. The existing electronic lock system was restricting free access, discouraging casual visits. In response, we proposed relocating the security boundary to create an open and accessible area outside the secured zone, envisioned as a “learning plaza.”

Although desks and chairs had been updated, the overall space remained dark and closed-off. To address this, we introduced a ceiling installation inspired by the traditional Japanese noren curtain, using lightweight Warlon paper panels arranged randomly. This design softens and diffuses light, conceals ceiling fixtures, and enhances both brightness and comfort—creating an inviting space that encourages cultural exchange.
