福井県勝山市の公共温泉施設のリニューアルプロジェクト。築30年の既存建物は、時代の変化に伴う用途の変更など、繰り返し対症療法的な改修が重ねられた結果、間仕切りが多く暗い印象を与える空間となっていました。私たちは、天井が高く立体的な構造的特徴をもつ既存建築の特性を活かし、間仕切りを撤去して一室空間とすることで、開放感を取り戻すことから設計を始めました。

ラウンジには、日本一の恐竜化石の発掘量を誇る勝山の地層「手取層群」をモチーフに、さまざまな高さをもつ多角形状の家具をランドスケープのように配置しました。照明や垂れ壁など同様の造形ルールを用い、空間に一体感を持たせています。また、家具の天板には質感やかたさの異なる素材を散りばめ、利用者が触感を頼りに自由に使い方を選べるように工夫しました。

この広々としたラウンジには、地元の人々と旅行者、老若男女が思い思いにくつろぐ様子が見られます。その風景はまるで日曜日の公園のようにおおらかで、公共空間が果たすべき多様性と柔軟性を体現していると考えています。

This is a renovation project for a public hot spring facility in Katsuyama City, Fukui Prefecture. The existing 30-year-old building had evidence of numerous symptomatic renovations, such as changes in use over time, and had many partitions, giving the space a dark impression. In order to make the most of the existing building's high ceilings and three-dimensional structural characteristics, the plan began with removing the partitions and creating an open, single-room space.

The furniture in the lounge is based on the Tetori Group, where Katsuyama boasts the largest amount of dinosaur fossils excavated in Japan, and is available as benches, fixtures, etc. The furniture is of various textures and heights and is arranged in a landscape-like manner. The lighting and hanging walls are also designed in the same style as the furniture, giving the space a sense of unity.

The sight of locals and tourists, of all ages and genders, relaxing in the spacious lounge as they pleased was as relaxed as a park on a Sunday, and I thought it might be one example of the kind of public facilities of the future that are multifunctional and embrace diversity.
